Glaze and Alchemy

The first glazes were accidents.

Ash fell into flame, sand melted — and something shimmered. In the Tang dynasty, celadon glaze emerged. In Islamic Persia, gold-like lustres were born from smoke and faith.

Long before we knew glaze chemistry, glaze was magic.

Today, at Mayfield Studios, we carry that mystery forward. This week, our shelves fill with Walkers glazes — a fresh batch for glaze testing in pottery.

We mix. Dip. Fire. Wait.

Students ask: “Why did this bubble?” “Is this satin or gloss?” “What happens if I overlap?”

The answers are part science, part story. Because the ceramic glaze process is not just formula. It's faith.

In our studio glaze experiments, every bowl is a spell. Every test tile holds potential.

The kiln shows us what fire remembers.
