FAQs

Studio access, spaces and firing.

A few helpful things to know before visiting Mayfield Studios — from studio access and storage to kiln firing, space hire and community use.

Do you still run pottery classes?

Structured pottery courses are currently paused. Mayfield is now focused on studio membership, casual studio access, kiln firing and creative space hire.

What is studio membership?

Studio membership is for people who want regular access to Mayfield and a place to keep making. Membership includes studio access during current studio hours, two personal 900mm shelves, a tool and clay storage box, a personal locker, reduced member firing rates and community talks and gatherings.

Can I use the studio casually?

Yes. Casual drop-in access is available during staffed studio hours. No booking is required. Casual access is $15 per hour, with a maximum of $70 per day.

Do I need experience to use the studio?

Studio access is for independent making, so some prior experience is helpful. You do not need to be an expert, but you do need to be comfortable working without instruction, cleaning up carefully and respecting the shared studio.

Can casual users leave work at the studio?

Permanent storage is reserved for members. Casual users may be able to leave work temporarily while it is drying, awaiting firing or awaiting collection, subject to available space.

What storage is included with membership?

Membership includes two personal 900mm shelves, one tool and clay storage box and one personal locker. Additional storage is not currently guaranteed.

How does firing work?

Mayfield offers bisque and glaze firing for members, studio users and independent ceramicists. Member firing is charged at a reduced rate. Oversized or unusual work may need to be quoted separately.

Can I hire space to teach my own class?

Yes. Mayfield has spaces available for independent teaching, workshops, photoshoots, creative gatherings and community use. Hirers bring their own students, clients or group and are responsible for their own participants, materials, setup and clean-up.

What spaces are available to hire?

The front studio, technical area and mezzanine are available by arrangement. The front studio is best for wheels, photography and hands-on workshops. The technical area is best for wet or messy work. The mezzanine is suited to talks, meetings, writing groups, craft gatherings and community use.

Do external teachers need insurance?

Depending on the activity, hirers must provide evidence of public liability insurance and any relevant licences, qualifications or checks. This is discussed after enquiry and before confirming a booking.

Are NDIS participants welcome?

Mayfield welcomes people of all abilities. Participants who require support are welcome to attend with their own support worker. Mayfield is no longer operating a separate NDIS program.
