Pottery School – Wheel Courses at Mayfield Studios
Our Pottery School in Abbotsford, Melbourne offers longer-format wheel courses so you can build skills over time. Start with our 4-Week Wheel-Throwing (Beginners) course, roll into Beyond Basics guided sessions at the same time slot, and then move into the Intermediate Wheel — 8-Week Course when you’re ready for a higher level of challenge.
Classes run on the same day and time each week in small groups, with plenty of support. Many students stay with us term after term, building confidence, rhythm and community in their clay practice.

4-Week Wheel-Throwing (Beginners)
Learn the full wheel-to-kiln process in a small, friendly class. Over four weeks you’ll throw, trim, glaze and take home finished pieces — with demos and one-to-one help.

Beyond Basics — 4-Week Guided Sessions
Stay on the same day and time and keep going. Beyond Basics is for students who have completed a beginners block and want more time on the wheel. We’ll refine technique, explore new forms and finishes, and build confidence at your own pace.
- Refine throwing & trimming skills
- Work towards sets and matched forms
- Experiment with handles, lids & altered shapes
- Glaze in Week 4 and/or roll into another block

Book Beyond Basics
Intermediate Wheel — 8-Week Course
For students who are comfortable centring and throwing basic forms and want a deeper dive. Over eight weeks in 3-hour sessions, you’ll work on more complex projects such as teapots, lidded jars, plates and larger vessels, with space to develop your own ideas.

Introduction to Handbuilding — 4-Week Course
