How to Reclaim and Reuse Clay at Home
Recycle dry or slaked clay with this step-by-step reclaiming guide.
Don’t throw away your trimmings, dry lumps, or slop bucket just yet — they can all be brought back to life. Reclaiming clay is an essential skill for potters who want to reduce waste and keep their materials in circulation.
Here’s how to reclaim clay from home, step by step:
1. Collect Your Clay
Keep a dedicated bucket or bin for trimmings, throwing slurry, and broken greenware. Make sure it’s just clay — no glaze or bisque bits.
2. Break It Down
Dry lumps? Let them fully dry, then break them into smaller pieces. If your clay is already wet (like slip or slurry), move on to the next step.
3. Rehydrate in Water
Add water just until the clay is submerged. Let it slake down for 24–48 hours. Stir occasionally until you get a yogurt-like consistency.
4. Pour onto Plaster or Cloth
Spread the clay onto a plaster slab or thick cloth over a board. This pulls out moisture and helps it return to a workable consistency.
5. Wedge and Store
Once firm enough to touch but still pliable, wedge it thoroughly. Then wrap it tightly in plastic and label it if you’re not using it right away.
Final Tip
You don’t need fancy gear — just patience. Reclaiming clay helps you stay connected to the cycle of making.
