Kiln Firing Terms & Conditions

Mayfield Studios · Last updated May 2026

These Terms & Conditions apply to all kiln firing services provided by Mayfield Studios. By submitting work for firing — whether in person, by drop-off, or through an online booking form — you acknowledge that you have read and agreed to these Terms & Conditions.

1. General Information

Mayfield Studios provides professionally managed electric kiln firing services for ceramic work.

Ceramic firing always carries some inherent risk. While every reasonable care is taken in handling and firing work, successful outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

Risks may include cracking, warping, glaze faults, thermal shock, breakage, colour variation, kiln atmosphere effects, explosions caused by trapped moisture, material incompatibility, or other unexpected firing results.

Work is submitted at the owner’s risk.

2. Acceptance of Work

Mayfield Studios reserves the right to refuse, cancel, or discontinue firing services for work considered unsafe, unsuitable, unstable, or incompatible with the requested firing process.

This may include:

  • work that is not fully dry
  • unknown or unsuitable clay bodies
  • experimental or unstable glazes
  • excessively thick glaze application
  • work with glaze on foot rings or kiln contact surfaces
  • oversized or structurally unstable pieces
  • items likely to damage kiln shelves, equipment, or other work

While every reasonable care is taken, successful firing outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

3. Client Responsibility

Clients are responsible for confirming the suitability of clay bodies and glazes, ensuring firing temperatures are correct, providing accurate firing information, testing glaze combinations prior to submission, and ensuring work is appropriately prepared for firing.

Mayfield Studios does not independently verify manufacturer specifications, glaze compatibility, or firing suitability on behalf of clients.

4. Shared Kiln Firings

Many firings are completed as shared kiln loads containing work from multiple makers.

Clients acknowledge that glaze stability and kiln-safe preparation are essential, and that unsuitable materials may affect kiln shelves, equipment, or other work.

Mayfield Studios reserves the right to decline work considered unsuitable for shared firings.

5. Kiln Loading and Operation

Clients may not load, unload, operate, adjust, or interfere with kilns unless expressly authorised by Mayfield Studios staff.

All kiln loading, scheduling, operation, and unloading is managed by the studio.

6. Firing Risks and Responsibility

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Mayfield Studios, its owners, employees, contractors, and representatives are not liable for loss or damage to submitted work, firing faults or failures, delays in firing or collection, or indirect or consequential loss.

This includes circumstances arising from kiln malfunction, electrical interruption, accidental damage, material incompatibility, or other unforeseen firing outcomes.

Nothing in these Terms & Conditions excludes rights that cannot legally be excluded under Australian Consumer Law.

7. Damage Caused by Submitted Work

In situations where submitted work causes damage to kiln shelves, equipment, or other work due to unstable materials or preparation issues, Mayfield Studios may recover reasonable repair or replacement costs.

8. Re-Firings

Re-firings are treated as new firings and charged accordingly.

Mayfield Studios is not responsible for outcomes resulting from additional firings requested by the client.

9. Turnaround Times

Any estimated turnaround times are indicative only.

Firing schedules may vary depending on kiln availability, drying conditions, studio workload, technical requirements, maintenance, or equipment issues.

Urgent or priority firings may incur additional charges where available.

10. Collection and Storage

Clients will be notified when work is ready for collection.

Work should be collected within a reasonable timeframe after notification.

Mayfield Studios reserves the right to charge storage fees for uncollected work, or recycle or responsibly dispose of work left for extended periods after reasonable notice.

11. Online Bookings and Quotes

Submission of an online firing request does not guarantee acceptance, scheduling, or availability.

Quotes and pricing may vary depending on kiln space required, firing type, technical complexity, and scheduling requirements.

A booking is only confirmed once accepted by Mayfield Studios.

12. Payment

Payment terms may vary depending on the firing service requested.

Mayfield Studios reserves the right to require payment in advance, deposits for private kiln bookings, or payment prior to collection.

Outstanding amounts must be paid before work is released.

13. Australian Consumer Law

These Terms & Conditions are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia.

Nothing in these Terms & Conditions excludes, restricts, or modifies any rights or remedies that cannot legally be excluded under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth), including the Australian Consumer Law.

14. Agreement

By submitting work for firing, the client confirms that:

  • they understand the risks associated with ceramic firing
  • the work is submitted at their own risk
  • all information provided is accurate
  • they have read and accepted these Terms & Conditions
