Membership Handbook
Welcome to Mayfield. We’re glad you’re here.
Mayfield is a shared ceramics studio built around making, community and creative independence. This handbook explains how the studio works and what we ask of members so the space stays calm, safe and welcoming.
Our Philosophy
Make good work. Be kind to people. Leave things a little better than you found them.
The studio works because members respect the space, equipment and one another. Everyone contributes to the atmosphere of Mayfield.
Membership Includes
- Independent studio access during approved access periods
- Use of wheels, worktables and shared studio equipment
- Two personal 900mm shelves
- Personal storage box
- Personal locker
- Member firing rates
- Access to community talks and studio gatherings
- One complimentary half-day mezzanine booking each year
Clay, firing and additional materials are charged separately.
Independent Studio Use
Mayfield is an independent studio. Membership does not include tuition, supervision or technical support.
Members are responsible for their own projects, processes, materials and safety. If you are unsure how to use equipment, materials or processes safely, please ask before proceeding.
Storage
Each member is allocated shelf space, a storage box and a locker.
- Keep all work, clay, tools and belongings within your allocated area
- Clearly label all work with your name and contact details
- Do not use another member’s storage area
- Work left outside allocated areas may be moved
Mayfield cannot accept responsibility for loss, theft or damage to personal property.
Clay
Members may use clay purchased through Mayfield or approved clay bodies.
Please do not bring unknown clay into the studio. Unknown clay bodies create risks during firing and may be declined. Damage caused by unsuitable clay may be charged to the member responsible.
Firing
All work must be placed in the designated firing area and prepared properly before firing.
- Work must be clearly labelled with your name and contact details
- Work must be weighed and paid for before firing
- Pieces must be completely dry before bisque firing
- Glazed bases must be thoroughly cleaned
- Member firing rate is currently $10/kg flat rate
Studio staff manage all kiln loading, unloading and firing. Members must not enter the technical area, load or unload kilns, operate kilns or adjust kiln settings unless authorised. All firing decisions remain at the discretion of studio management.
Glazing
Please glaze thoughtfully.
If you are experimenting with unfamiliar glazes, techniques or materials, please discuss them with us first. Glaze on the bottom of work can permanently damage kiln shelves. Damage to kiln shelves, kiln furniture or equipment may be charged to the member responsible.
Cleaning and Studio Care
Please leave enough time to clean up before you leave.
- Clean your wheel
- Clean tools and bats
- Wipe down work surfaces
- Sweep where necessary
- Return equipment to its proper location
The studio should be ready for the next person when you leave.
Studio Layout and Equipment
The studio has been intentionally configured to support multiple users, classes, events and firing operations simultaneously.
Please do not rearrange furniture, shelving, wheels, workstations, glazing areas or equipment because you prefer a different arrangement.
- Do not rearrange furniture
- Do not move shelving
- Do not move wheels between locations
- Do not reconfigure workstations
- Do not attempt equipment repairs
- Do not remove studio tools from the premises
If you believe a change would improve the studio, we welcome suggestions. However, decisions regarding studio layout remain the responsibility of studio management.
Guests
Guests are welcome by prior arrangement.
Casual access fees may apply. Members are responsible for ensuring that guests comply with studio policies.
Studio Culture
Mayfield works best when people are generous with one another.
- Treat others respectfully
- Share equipment fairly
- Welcome new members
- Leave room for different approaches to clay
- Help create a positive and inclusive environment
There is no place for bullying, harassment or intimidation. Everyone was new once.
Membership Review
Membership may be reviewed, suspended or cancelled where studio policies are repeatedly ignored or where behaviour negatively affects the studio community.
We hope this never becomes necessary.
