Georgia Powell is a Melbourne-born ceramic artist who has spent six years building a studio practice in El Tuito, in the mountains of Jalisco, Mexico. She works with local clay she digs and formulates herself, hand-building sculptural vessels and wall pieces now held in collections across Mexico and the US. Before clay, she spent more than 20 years as a floral designer, and she still builds the way a florist arranges, composing forms until they belong together. She trained at Mexico's Escuela Nacional de Cerámica and has taught hand building for five years.
In this workshop:
Georgia will demonstrate coil building using traditional techniques she learned in her now home of Mexico, how to build strong forms, refine them, and bring them to life with sculptural elements and surface detail. Bring your questions and whatever you've been wanting to learn. New hand builders will leave with solid foundations, and experienced makers with fresh ways to push form and surface.
