Red Gum Mug

$45.00

A sturdy, wide-based mug in a red gum ash glaze gathered in the studio fire place, with a dark red tenmoku lining. Handmade by Sally Ninham Ceramics.

The third mug in Australian Classics range, alongside Snow Gum and Ironbark. It’s wheel-thrown from [Feeney’s Dark Stoneware] in the same steady, tapered shape, with a broad base and a generous pulled handle for a full grip.

The outside is dipped in a red gum ash glaze, made with ash from Australian red gum. In the kiln, the ash melts into a pale, weathered surface. The iron-rich clay burns through in patches of rust and chocolate, so every mug has its own landscape. Inside, a dark, glossy [tenmoku] lining wraps over the rim, so it looks lovely from above with coffee or tea in it.

Each mug carries different external marks and a row of soft white arches around the foot. These little marks of the hand mean no two are the same.

Because each mug is glazed and fired by hand, and ash glazes are naturally unpredictable, the colour and breaks vary from piece to piece. That’s part of its character, not a flaw.

  • 8.5 cm high · [8] cm rim · [9] cm base

  • Approx. 400 g · holds approx. 250 - 300 ml
