Pottery in Melbourne: Why Choose Mayfield Studios?
Why Choose Mayfield Studios?
Melbourne is full of places to get muddy — but not all studios feel the same. Some are sleek and structured, others cosy and chaotic.
At Mayfield Studios in Abbotsford, we sit happily at the warmer, more human end of the spectrum. We’re artist-run, idea-friendly and completely unpretentious — a place where beginners, tinkerers, experimenters and returning potters are equally welcome.
Location & Studio Atmosphere
Mayfield Studios (Abbotsford)
Tucked away near Johnston Street, we’re a quick tram ride from Fitzroy or the CBD. The studio is light-filled, lived-in and full of charm — part working studio, part kitchen-table energy. We play music, we chat, and we let the clay (and conversation) do its thing.
If you’re looking for a pottery studio in Melbourne that feels warm, relaxed and a little bit quirky, this is your spot.
Beginner-Friendly (Really.)
You don’t need to know anything about clay to start here — honestly. Our teachers are friendly, flexible and curious about what you want to make.
- Ask questions (lots of them).
- Make wonky, weird, wonderful pieces.
- Laugh when your pot flops — we’ve all been there.
Our pottery courses are designed so beginners and returners feel supported, not intimidated.
Classes with Personality
At Mayfield, classes are structured enough to learn the fundamentals — and relaxed enough to feel like you.
- Wheel-throwing classes that don’t take themselves too seriously.
- Handbuilding sessions with room to explore your own ideas.
- Our much-loved Clay Soirée events — think clay, candles, music and snacks; like a dinner party with mud.
The Vibe
Warm. Quirky. Inclusive. A little bit rogue (in a good way).
You’ll meet people from all walks of life. You’ll hear laughter, clinking mugs, and maybe a playlist that drifts from Nina Simone to 90s hip hop.
We’re also proudly politics-free: a space to unplug, use your hands and leave the noise behind. No agendas. No pressure. Just clay, conversation and community.
Inclusive & Accessible
Mayfield Studios proudly welcomes NDIS participants. Whether you’re self-managed or plan-managed, we’re happy to work with you (or your support team) to arrange classes that suit your needs.
We believe creativity should be available to everyone. Our relaxed studio environment supports people of all abilities and neurotypes to feel safe, seen and part of the community.
Learn more on our NDIS participation page or get in touch with questions.
