What to Expect at a Pottery Class in Melbourne

Booked your first pottery class? Amazing. Whether you're coming to Mayfield Studios or exploring other Melbourne studios, here’s what to expect when you walk into a pottery session — from clay prep to glaze day.

1. You’ll Get Messy — In the Best Way

Clay gets everywhere. We provide aprons, but wear clothes you’re comfortable getting dirty, and keep your nails short. It’s all part of the joy.

2. You’ll Learn Quickly (and Laugh Often)

Even in a beginner session, you’ll:

  • Learn to wedge and prepare clay

  • Try techniques like hand-building or wheel throwing

  • Decorate or texture your work

Expect guidance, encouragement, and a few creative surprises along the way.

3. The Studio Environment Matters

At Mayfield Studios, we keep it friendly, calm, and community-focused. Whether you're coming alone or with friends, the studio vibe is relaxed and inclusive — no art-school pressure here.

4. You Don’t Take Your Pot Home That Day

Ceramics is a slow process. After class, your piece is:

  • Dried thoroughly

  • Bisque fired in the kiln

  • Glazed and fired again

We’ll let you know when it’s ready (usually 2–4 weeks later).

5. You Might Just Fall in Love with Clay

We’ve seen it happen countless times. Someone joins a taster class, and by the end they’re asking about 6-week courses or open studio access. Pottery is grounding, creative, and just a bit addictive.
